How To Overcome Failure To Launch Anxiety

By Jerry Thompson

Adulthood is something that everyone has to go through when they start reaching the age of 18 onward which is a rather challenging stage in life. Nowadays, it is actually quite common because life has become more fast paced and therefore a bit more stressful for the next generation. Because of the pressures for young adults these days, it is no wonder that most end up with failure to launch anxiety.

FTL syndrome is very common among people from the above mentioned age group because this is the age wherein one has to go out and already start fending for him or herself. However, it seems that most parents did not equip their children that well to face the harshness of life. This is why they grow up not prepared to become independent and unleash a survival instinct.

Of course, parents do not do this on purpose as there is good intentions involved in all of this. The previous generation of baby boomers were the ones who were born during the rising of the world economy and had to step up in order to have a good life. While they were going through hardships, they did not want their children to go through the same thing, which is why they provide their kids with comfortable lives.

While the intention is quite pure, the result is that the next generation of young adults are not as strong mentally and emotionally. One reason would be because they live in a time where they are always used to getting what they want instantly. They will eventually be lead into a world wherein they cannot get everything right away and that they have to work for certain things.

Because their attitudes are geared toward instant gratification, they avoid problems if ever they cannot solve them easily. Of course, ignoring problems also has its own set of consequences. If one ignores his or her problems instead of facing them head on, then these problems may make him or her more anxious, that of which could lead to depression.

So the big question here is how to overcome FTL syndrome or anxiety issues. Well, it is important to recognize this as an actual mental health issue that has to be addressed. With that in mind, probably some counselling is needed by an actual counselor or therapist.

Aside from seeing a professional, one must have full support from family and friends. With regard to parents, parents must always ensure that they have an open communication with their children so that they know exactly what their children feel. It is also important for parents to never criticize failure. Failure should in fact, be encouraged provided the individual learns from it.

In the end, spoiling a child is not good for when he or she will be a young adult. The parents play a very big role in the development of the child. If a child is not ready to face the world when he or she reaches the right age, he or she will definitely get FTL anxiety. If a young adult does have FTL syndrome though, then it has to be addressed right away.
